Interview with His Excellence, Anton Cosha, Romano-Catholic Bishop of Chisinau - After the the meeting at Rome with His Sanctity Bartholome I, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Pope Ioan Paul II declared that in the framework of the visit “ had been well understood the fact that orthodox and catholic people both are called to work in common that Europe has not forgotten own Christian roots” Could you tell, how have responded to this appeal Orthodox and Catholics from Republic of Moldova and what is character of their mutual relations? - In His discourse, His Sanctity, Pope John Paul II from the June, 29th, 2004, addressed to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartolome I, to which are you referring, it is necessary to note attentively that this visit took place forty years later, after "blessed meeting" in Jerusalem between Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Atenagoras I; a meeting which has fundamentally changed relations, until that moment very tensioned, between two Churches that existed since 1054. This historical meeting of two Churches causes a feeling of deep enjoyment which allowed retaking with confidence the relations interrupted for so long time. However change did not mean a full unification. The period of intensive rapprochement and mutual acknowledge has followed....

Significance of Saint Cross in Orthodoxy
october 1 2004 - 14:20 (Public Centre for Strategic Analysis and Monitoring)
“For the message of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” (I Corinthians 1, 18). If we look at human history from the beginning until nowadays we can observe 2 pieces of wood that marked all its development. First is the knowledge tree of good and evil from the paradise, and the second is the Cross on which was crucified Our Savior, Jesus Christ, first seems to have life, but brings death, the second seems to be dead, but brings life. The wood of the tree from paradise brought death to the human, removed Adam from the paradise and all human beings, made humankind gratify all the pleasures, the cravings of sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts, made the human learn what means hostility, suffering, pain. But, wood of the Cross, brought him eternal life, took him back into paradise, made the human to leave “the skin wear” and to comprehend that body can be transfigured, made the human to acknowledge and appreciate God’s love, that can be reached thru effort, suffering, renunciation. The symbol of cross to pre-Christian peoples To understand the significance and importance of Cross for Christianity we have to show the role it had for the pre-Christian peoples and for Jewish. The sign of Cross...

Syncretism- a new religion
may 26 2004 - 17:15 (Public Centre for Strategic Analysis and Monitoring)
The ethnographer Aura Arriola from Mexico describes in her book “Religiosity of people in the south of Mexico”, the religious syncretism as a normal thing for inhabitants of this territory. Shamans, the pagan rituals, scarification of animals, catholic and Gospel rituals- all these interfered with natives’ life. The author of this monograph studied 10 years the problem of the religious character of the Southern part of her country. She states:” All these faiths create a palette of colors in the soul of people from Mexico and Guatemala”. Regardless the fact that the official religion of this territory is Catholic, shamanism is a natural element for native people. Inherited techniques from their ancestors in communicating with spirits and the treatment with medical herbs are their basic occupations. An interesting fact is that a lot of people, who go to church on Sunday, during the week visit magicians, make rituals to purify the soul and get cured by applying shamanist techniques. “Shamans are considered intermediaries between the dead and the living. Who is not curious to know what will happen after death? In this way “prophet’s” door are never closed”, Arriola lets us know. This kind of magician is Don Jile, who states that he can enter in contact with the souls of Mexican artists from ’30 - ’40 of XX- century. A very popular ritual is praying to the “saint” Simon, a catholic original from Maya’s population. People who come to this statue put in his...
